In this immersive service-learning experience, participants will explore social issues affecting the Indianapolis community and participate in at least two local service projects with organizations addressing those issues–and that’s just the first week! During the second week of activities, participants will journey to New Orleans and be immersed in a cultural experience where they will not only learn about the history of the city, but will also be exposed to social issues affecting the communities in New Orleans. During their times in New Orleans, participants will complete a collaborative research project where they will compare and contrast issues in Indianapolis to New Orleans. Participants will gain awareness of differences between people and recognize the value of serving the community at large; proactively create positive social interactions between peers through mentoring and relationship building; gain more self-confidence and better self-image; and learn techniques to be more empathetic and tolerant of others.
